Let’s start sippin’ and shoppin’ with a gem of the south – moonshine! We are talking about Palmetto Moonshine from Palmetto Distillery. This is a company with deep roots and a lot of history in South Carolina, as well as in the moonshine business. Brothers Trey and Bryan Boggs are the company’s founders, and today the distillery’s mission is to honor their family’s long-standing heritage by creating whiskey unmatched in taste or quality.
Where can you find Palmetto Moonshine here in Myrtle Beach? The company store can be found at 4801 S. Kings Highway, about 13 minutes south of the Dayton House. At the 3,000-square-foot facility, you can stop in for a FREE tour and learn how moonshine is made. Of course, the tour also touches on the specific history of moonshine creation in South Carolina and in the Boggs family. For those in your party over the age of 21 (valid ID required), there are FREE tastings to indulge in. Be warned, though, you are likely to quickly find yourself a fan of the taste of the South. There is a souvenir shop on-site, and in it you can to purchase all of the flavors of Palmetto Moonshine – of which there are many!
Next, let’s head north. About 16 miles up Kings Highway in North Myrtle Beach, there is a little bit of sweetness tucked in between Barefoot Landing and Alligator Adventure. This is Duplin Winery, where wine lovers are in for a sweet treat. They say life is sweeter with Duplin, and there is good reason for that. Duplin wine is made from the very best and sweetest muscadine grapes available.
While at the winery, you can learn about their wine-making and bottling process, unwind in their courtyard, stroll through their shop (where they offer wine accessories and a line of Duplin Gourmet Foods products), and, of course, savor a tasting of all the winery has to offer. The tastings are open to visitors over age 21 (with valid ID) with a $10 fee, which provides you with the opportunity to sample up to 10 wines while also enjoying scrumptious crackers and dip that complement the wine-tasting perfectly.
Ready for one more stop on our sip and shop tour? Last but not least is Myrtle Beach’s very own New South Brewery. Tucked away in a spot not too far from downtown Myrtle Beach and the Dayton House, New South is a microbrewery local to our beach town since 1998 and is a favorite of many residents and visitors. The brewery has one mission – to supply those living in or visiting South Carolina with fresh and flavorful ales and lagers. They accomplish this goal many times over every single day. Don’t leave without tasting your way through the brewery’s lineup and deciding on a favorite brew to take home. You can also peruse New South’s website for local restaurants that proudly pour and serve New South Brewing products.
Please note that with this Myrtle Beach gem, you will need advance reservations for tours and tastings. It’s not difficult getting them, though. You may make your reservations online at squareup.com/store/newsouthbrewing. Please also know prior to your tour that while they welcome well-behaved children on tours, they do ask that no strollers be brought into the brewery.
Most locals have their own favorite among the three sip-and-shop stops we’ve profiled here, but we love them all and know you will also. If you would like any information about these destinations while staying with us at the Dayton House resort, never hesitate to let us know.
