Holiday traditions are one of the ways families connect and bond with each other. If you are looking for a wonderful new tradition that will bring the family together during your holiday stay at Dayton House Resort, the Nights of a Thousand Candles event at Brookgreen Gardens is a perfect choice.
Brookgreen Gardens is a 9,000-plus-acre sculpture garden in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, that blends art and nature in harmonious beauty. The gardens are well worth a visit at any time of year, but especially so during the holiday season, when they are transformed into a magical world of Christmas light displays and holiday music. During the Nights of a Thousand Candles event, the gardens glow in the light of over 5,500 hand-lit candles, in addition to countless electric bulbs, creating an atmosphere both enchanting and uplifting. The attraction’s 80-foot Christmas tree alone is decorated with over 70,000 glimmering lights, which come to life in a daily tree-lighting ceremony at 5:45 p.m.
Other favorite spots include the Diana Pool, where a statue of the pool’s namesake Roman goddess is illuminated by floating candles filling the water around her, and the fanciful Children’s Garden, with its colored luminaries and Chinese lanterns strung over a reflecting pool in a stunning display. This year, there will also be a glass sculpture exhibit featuring an entire garden of hand-blown glass flowers and trees!
There are museum displays, roaming bagpipe players and an entertainment tent for choral and bell-ringing performances during the event. Food will be served in a heated dining tent, where visitors can purchase items including BBQ, burgers, chicken and shrimp. There will also be a beverage tent where you can get a cup of cocoa or hot cider to warm you up if the evening is cool, and the Old Kitchen tent, where you can purchase soups and snacks. Brookgreen Gardens’ Pavilion Restaurant will be closed during this event, however, if a cafeteria-style meal is not what you’re looking for, you can always stop in at one of the many fine restaurants in Myrtle Beach or Murrells Inlet on your way to or from the attraction.
Nights of a Thousand Candles runs Thursday through Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m. for the three weekends preceding Christmas in December - Dec. 1-3, 8-10 and 15-18. Please note, it is not a drive-through display; visitors will walk through the various gardens and exhibits, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and plan accordingly if you are bringing young children or older people who may not be able to walk long distances.
Due to the popularity of the event, Brookgreen Gardens is instituting a new ticketing policy this year. Tickets may be purchased in advance via the Brookgreen Gardens website at www.brookgreen.org/, and the number of tickets sold each evening will be limited - so don’t wait until the last minute to book your admission!
Let Nights of a Thousand Candles become the heart of a new family tradition during the holidays in Myrtle Beach - and we’ll look forward to providing your home away from home at Dayton House Resort.
