SOS Fall Migration to Have Thousands Dancing in the Streets

If you’ve ever been to Myrtle Beach, you probably know a thing or two about the Grand Strand’s love of beach music and that dance the people do. Yes, that’s right — the Carolina Shag!

If you aren’t very familiar with this local-favorite style of dance, here’s what you need to know. The partner dance is said to have originated along the coast in the Myrtle Beach area in the 1940s. And, while you are enjoying your stay at Dayton House Resort, we want to include you in the biggest shag party of the year!

Since the enduring Carolina Shag continues to work its way into people’s hearts, Myrtle Beach continues to welcome numerous shag clubs and events that attract shaggers from all over the country. One of the main dance events that the Grand Strand is proud to showcase is the Society of Stranders' annual Fall Migration. This year, the event will take place Sept. 16-25 in North Myrtle Beach. This is the perfect time to take an adult vacation and allow yourselves to enjoy a relaxing time and soak up the last days of summer on the Carolina coast.

Start the week off by heading out to “two of the biggest block parties you have ever seen” — Fun Sunday and Fun Monday. Everyone who has traveled from near and far to celebrate the love of pink shoes and beach music gathers along Ocean Drive for some fun. On Sunday, the party is held outside North Myrtle Beach’s OD Arcade, where some of the top names in beach and shag music will assist you in dancing the day away with thousands of others gathered for the celebration. The fun continues on Monday with a similar dance party packing Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. It is difficult to imagine that the week gets any better than celebrating with your closest shag friends, but believe it or not, that is just the beginning of an unforgettable week!

After meeting your fellow shaggers and checking out the awesome vendors and merchandise at the street parties, your celebrations continue in the clubs the rest of the week. After enjoying a beautiful sunrise at the Dayton House while sipping some coffee, taking a dip in the oceanfront pool or sleeping in after the late night of shagging, head over to Duck’s Cafe, where you can enjoy a shag workshop with Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee, the 10-time national overall shag champions and members of the Shagger’s Hall of Fame. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you could do it every morning if you desire!

That isn’t the only thing Duck’s has to offer, as the club will also have DJs and bands throughout the remainder of the day. In addition to Duck’s Cafe, the OD Arcade will also have various DJs throughout the week. Other clubs featuring bands and DJs during the shag-filled week include Fat Harold’s, Pirate’s Cove and the clubs at the Ocean Drive Beach & Golf Resort. With so many different locations and dance parties, it will be hard to decide where to go every day — but you will never run out of options!

Fall Migration is just around the corner, so start packing your dance shoes and planning where you’ll dance your days away. We at The Dayton House will be ready to host you and your dancing friends for a fun-filled week in Myrtle Beach!
