Celebrate Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach

Get ready for beach days and barbecues – the summer season is almost here! To really get your season started in style, book your Memorial Day weekend stay at Dayton House Resort and start making your plans to enjoy some of the many fun and patriotic activities going on around Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand during the holiday weekend.

Get your holiday off to a running start at the 7th Annual Dirty Myrtle Mud Run, which is being held on Saturday, May 27. Not your typical 3-mile race, this test of endurance sends you up, over and through various obstacles on your way to the finish line, which you reach by crawling through a whole lot of mud! Get down and dirty at the Mud Run, where “happiness is a lot of mud!”

If crawling through mud isn’t really your thing, Brookgreen Gardens will be holding a more traditional 5K race on Sunday, May 28. Brookgreen’s annual race is extremely popular in part because, with a 6 p.m. start time, it is one of the few evening races held in the Myrtle Beach area. Another reason for the event’s popularity, of course, is that the racecourse winds through the property’s beautiful scenery. This is the only race being hosted by Brookgreen Gardens this year, so don’t miss the chance to take part!

Memorial Day weekend also brings the annual Atlantic Beach Bike Week, also known as Black Bike Week. Cruise down the coast on your motorcycle and join fellow bikers at the beach! There will be meet-and-greets, parties and live music held at various Myrtle Beach venues May 26-29. Check out their website for specific details!

Amid all the fun of the holiday, it is important to remember that Memorial Day is about honoring our veterans and those who have given their lives to help protect our freedom and the American way of life.

In honor of our vets, the Military Appreciation Days Parade will be held Saturday, May 27, at The Market Common, former site of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. and will travel along Howard Avenue and Farrow Parkway. Get there early to find a good spot along the route, and show your support for our troops!

Brookgreen Gardens is also presenting its Red, White, and Blue Salute to Veterans that runs all three days of the long weekend. Flags will be placed throughout the gardens to mark patriotic sculptures and sculptures created by veterans, and printed information about the various works will be available at the Welcome Center. Walk through the tranquil beauty of Brookgreen Gardens at your own pace, and honor the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Brookgreen Garden is also holding its Breakfast with the Butterflies on Saturday, May 27, and it’s a great event for families with small children. The delicious catered breakfast includes children’s activities and a 30-minute visit to the Whispering Wings Butterfly House, where the children can walk among the butterflies! They will receive a tote bag and their very own pair of butterfly wings to take home with them.

There will be no shortage of fun and plenty of great ways to pay your respects when you spend the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend in Myrtle Beach at the oceanfront Dayton House Resort.
