In September 1960, the Thomas family moved from Monroe, North Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to operate the Dayton House, a 14-room beach cottage on the oceanfront. Customary in the 1960's, motel operators lived and worked on site. Operators rented and cleaned rooms, washed laundry, and performed maintenance. Most importantly, owners like the Thomas family, developed personal relationships with their valued guests from the start. These core beliefs in personal service have developed the Dayton House into a family vacation tradition for over 50 years.
Myrtle Beach in the 1960's consisted mainly of beach cottages, snow cones, putt-putt mini-golf, cruisin' the boulevard and rides at the old Pavilion amusement park.
Myrtle Beach has experienced many changes in the last 50 years. Once a sleepy little beach town that hosted Carolina vacationers from Memorial Day thru Labor Day, has developed into one of the top family vacation destinations on the East Coast, as well as the nations # 1 family beach, serving guests all year long from all over the world.
To accompany the warm, sandy beaches, the Grand Strand area offers visitors such amenities including over 100 golf courses, top-notch live entertainment, world class dining, shopping and Southern history and cultural experiences. Myrtle Beach provides anything a visitor to the area desires - including modern accommodations.
From its humble beginnings as a 14-room cottage, the Dayton House has evolved into a 328-room resort boasting five buildings and spanning an entire oceanfront block. For your convenience and enjoyment, the resort features John’s Restaurant with free room delivery service after 2pm daily, the Yella Umbrella poolside bar and grill, lazy river tube ride, indoor and outdoor pools, small meeting space, a business center with complimentary coffee service, and free WiFi throughout the resort. Our most popular amenity described by guests as “the most beautiful and comfortable pool and lawn on the Grand Strand” features two acres of yellow-umbrella covered picnic tables and lounge chairs - perfect for a relaxing, sunny afternoon at the beach.
Although a much larger footprint than in 1960, the heart of the Dayton House will never change. The Thomas family believes in providing a family-friendly environment at a genuine value. This concept has withstood the test of time. Our motto of “Creating Generations of Family Fun” has kept families returning to the Dayton House year after year since 1960. If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience our Southern hospitality and family-friendly amenities yet, let us invite you to make 2014 the year to experience our unique blend of the past and present.
