In September 1960, the Thomas family moved from Monroe, North Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to operate the Dayton House, a 14 room beach cottage on the oceanfront. Customary, in the 1950's and 1960's, motel operators lived and worked in the cottage. They did everything that needed to be done. Operators rented and cleaned rooms, washed the laundry, and performed the maintenance - they did it all. That's the way it was at the Colonial Inn, the Martha Fickling, the Helena Villa, and the Parker House and the Dayton House.
That was old Myrtle Beach; beach cottages, snow cones, putt-putt mini-golf, cruisin' the boulevard and rides at the old Pavilion amusement park.
During the past 50 years, Myrtle Beach has changed. Once a sleepy little beach town that hosted Carolina vacationers from Memorial Day thru Labor Day, Myrtle Beach has now grown to be one of the top vacation destinations on the East Coast, as well as the nations # 1 family beach, serving guests all year long from all over the world.
Besides the beautiful sandy beaches, the Grand Strand also offers visitors amenities such as golf courses galore, top-notch entertainment, world class dining, shopping and more shopping. Myrtle Beach provides anything a visitor to the area desires - including modern accommodations.
Over time, the Dayton House has evolved as well. From its humble beginnings as a 14-room cottage, the Dayton House has grown into a 328-unit resort boasting five buildings and spanning an entire oceanfront block. For your convenience and enjoyment, the resort features Uncle John’s Family Restaurant, the Yella Umbrella poolside bar and grill, small meeting space, a business center and complimentary wireless internet throughout the resort. Not to mention, we’ve created what many guests have described as “the most beautiful and comfortable pool and lawn on the Grand Strand”.
The heart of the Dayton House will never change. The Thomas family believes in providing a clean, safe, family-friendly environment at a genuine value. Their management concept has withstood the test of time. Our motto of “Generations of Family Fun” has kept your families returning to visit the Dayton House family year after year since 1960.
